Sedona

arizona

Sedona is one of the world's premier destination spots. Located 120 miles north of Phoenix and 114 miles from the Grand Canyon, Sedona's main attraction is its stunning array of red sandstone formations, the Red Rocks of Sedona. The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The Red Rocks form a breathtaking backdrop for everything from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. The red coloring you see in the cliffs, rocks and dirt comes from the abundance of iron oxide left from a post-glacial age ocean that once filled the Verde Valley.

Sedona sits at an elevation of 4,500 feet above sea level, and the town has a population of 11,000 people within its 19 square miles. The first settler arrived in 1876 and the first post office was established in 1902. At that time there were 55 residents in the area, and by the mid-1950s when the first phone directory was published there were 155 residents listed. Some parts of Sedona didn't receive electricity until the 1960s. Sedona was incorporated as a city in 1988.

Sedona sees more than 400,000 tourists annually, not only because of the unique red rock geological formations that draw worldwide attention, but also because of the opportunity for year-round outdoor recreational activites such as camping, hiking and fishing, and in-town activities with an abundance of retail shops, restaurants, art galleries, musical and theatrical performances, spiritual and personal enrichment activities, festivals and community events.

Sedona Vortices

It's said that Sedona is home to numerous vortexes, or centers of spiritual energy. These vortexes are purportedly located at Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Schnebly Hill and Boynton Canyon. Each of these centers of energy has its own attributes and collectively they began to attract the attention of New Age followers after the 1988 Harmonic Convergence. Because of the spiritual vortexes, Sedona is a bit of a mecca for spiritual healers and those interested in the mystic arts. It's undeniable that the red rock territory possesses a distinct energy vibration that resonates with sacred and awe-inspiring sensations, inspiring peace, harmony and enlightenment.
